BLT #35 | Free advice that you didn't ask for...

May 1, 2025

We know the last few years have been a bit of a "zoom call free for all" with the pandemic thrusting millions of people's personal lives into their work meetings. But now that we're a few years out from the thick of the chaos, it's time we get back to basics with video call etiquette.

WE BELIEVE:

You can't ace an interview without acing the basics.

You've got to nail the basics when it comes to your job search. It may sound simple, but it's impossible to overstate the importance of showing up on time, arriving prepared, and keeping a tidy background on video calls. The hard truth is that people - especially very busy people - make snap judgements about you when you're in an interview. Don't let the foundational stuff take you out of the running before the race has even begun.

SOMETHING WE LOVE:

Watch this valiant effort to not let a background distraction derail the call.

YOU SHOULD TRY:

Doing a virtual setup audit.

Don't overthink this, but check the fundamentals before your next call:

  • Your background | Is my background tidy? Generally speaking, the simpler the better. Plants, bookshelves, or even plain walls are great options. Avoid kitchens, living rooms or other spaces that invite other household members or too many visual distractions.
  • Your lighting | Make sure your face is well lit to ensure others on the call can see you clearly; dark shadows on your face don't do anyone any favors. If you're near a window, try your best to face the window directly so that the natural light can give you a balanced, even light.
  • Yourself | Pretend that you're live in a room with the person on the the zoom call. Sit up tall, speak clearly, and don't forget to smile. 💚
